Hi Bryant... I'm one of your students from the spring workshop in Greensboro this year. I stopped by to check out your blog now that I'm back in the classroom. One of the lessons I'm teaching is how to make a book, which I learned from you. Fifth graders will be using it in their science class, to write and illustrate their science vocabulary words... in addition they'll be illustrating the covers of the book with a radial-symmetrical design. I thoroughly enjoyed your workshop, and learned mountains of tips (using recycled materials), especially the flowers made from discarded plastic soda bottles. I love your blog... will be back to become more informed on how I too can reduce plastic in my daily life. I recycle in my classroom... many teachers in our school already reduce, reuse, and recycle. BTW, happy birthday!

Hi Karen--Interesting about Paperhand puppet having"plastic in the ocean" as a character....have you seen "Addicted to Plastic"? If not you can get it off the web. In it a scientist from Scandinavia is stuyding sea birds and says--that most ALL seabirds have some plastic in their stomachs--not just the one near the gyres of plastic in the middle of our oceans. How are you and your family doing with not using "single-use" plastic? Oh, and plus, I finally saw "No Impact Man" --very interesting, inspiring and challenging....I am begining to think how I will live when my "reluctant"year is up? Perhaps, I will no longer feel so "reluctant" about attempting NOT TO USE THROW AWAY PLASTIC...by now, I am mostly enjoying the challenge---I can't wait to see the paperhand play!

Bryant - thinking about you and your work and your inspiration. i hope you will come see the paperhand puppet intervention show this summer. i think it will resonate. plastic in the ocean is one of the characters this year as is the knowledge and hope that we can make a difference.

Judith--You are welcome. I know what you mean when you say sometimes you get looked at cross-eyed. This is usually from people who have never thought of what you are concerned about....Sometimes, when I am tired, this is especially hard. On the other hand, sometimes I am so surprised. A month ago, when I was in the Miami airport between flights, the young woman at he bakery was absolutely thrilled when I told her, no plastic please...And I saw more than one person, refilling their own H20 bottles rather than buying PET plastic ones. And--today in the grocery store, the 4 people I was in line with ALL!!!!! had brought their own bags......I think people are learning to pay attention--the more we do, the more others will join, is what I am counting on. All the best.
